About the blog

According to folklorist Vance Randolph, “back-stay” is an old-time Ozark term meaning “the explanation of how something came to be.” A story’s always more interesting when you know the back-stay.

This blog is a way for us to share some of the history—the back-stay—of life in the Arkansas Ozarks. We’ll focus on artifacts, photographs, and documents in our collections, and occasionally we’ll offer some thoughts about the adventures of museum work.

Welcome to The Back-Stay. Come see us when you can.
