Join us in for our monthly Not Strictly History series with a presentation by University of Arkansas professors Greg Herman and David Fredrick for a presentation at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, in the Shiloh Meeting Room at the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History. They will discuss the ongoing importance of the architecture of Fay Jones and the subtle but deep connections in design and inspiration between his chapels and his residential architecture. The presentation is in conjunction with the digital interactive kiosk exhibit about Jones’ work currently on display at the Shiloh Museum. The kiosk will be available at the lecture and will be on display at the museum through December 31, 2023.
Four decades after its construction, Thorncrown Chapel remains a compelling masterpiece of American architecture, receiving the Twenty-five Year Award from the American Institute of Architects in 2006, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. In this illustrated lecture, In both, Jones created a profound interplay between architectural space and the natural world, working with a basic palette of wood, water, stone, glass, and light.
The lecture will trace the development of a digital application for the web and touch-based kiosks that uses game engine technology to give players’ an immersive, interactive experience of Jones’ design principles, from the Fay and Gus Jones House in Fayetteville to Thorncrown Chapel outside Eureka Springs. Supported by an internal Chancellor’s Fund grant from the University of Arkansas and a Digital Projects for the Public Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the application was developed by an interdisciplinary team of students and faculty from the Tesseract Center in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences and the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design.
This in-person event is also available for viewing live online. Please note this free online event is limited to 100 participants. Registration is required. After you register, you will receive an email confirmation with a Zoom link to join the event.
The presentation is sponsored by KUAF 91.3 Public Radio.
